Thursday, August 15, 2019: A Reforestation Day was recently held as a voluntary activity of the Green Development Fund Program for the region SICA / REDD+ Landscapein coordination with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of El Salvador (MARN).
Green Development Fund for the SICA region,is a regional program financed by the European Union together with the Federal Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Germany (BMU) and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für international Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in coordination with CCAD.
Staff from GIZ and the Japanese cooperation agency (JICA) participated in the activity, as well as staff from the European Union, the Environmental Investment Fund of El Salvador (FIAES) and MARN
This activity is integrated into El Salvador's initiative to restore one million hectares under the global commitment of the Bonn Challenge, which is a global effort to restore 150 million hectares of degraded and deforested forests by 2020, and 350 million hectares by 2030.
The site selected for this activity is in the buffer zone of the Hoja de Sal Protected Area in the cantons of El Llano and El Zapote in the municipality of Jujutla, department of Ahuachapán in western El Salvador. This initiative will benefit three water springs located in the area, which will increase the availability of water to the inhabitants.
The activities of the program Green Development Fund for the SICA region/ REDD Landscape are focused on improving the essential environmental services for adaptation to climate change. These initiatives seek to reduce vulnerability to climate change in degraded areas of Central America and the Dominican Republic through the restoration of ecosystems and landscapes.
