Dominican Republic presents guide to restore degraded ecosystems and landscapes

The guide describes the step-by-step process from planning restoration to its final monitoring and evaluation.

December, 2020. Dominican Republic. The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources developed the "Methodological Guide for the Restoration of Degraded Ecosystems and Landscapes in the Dominican Republic" with the technical assistance of the Green Development Fund for the SICA Region implemented by GIZ. In this process, the ecological restoration experiences of the Ministry and other Dominican organizations and institutions were systematized to propose a model for the restoration of degraded ecosystems in the Dominican Republic thereby increase the resilience of landscapes in the face of climate change.

The guide describes the step-by-step process from planning restoration to its monitoring and final evaluation. It was prepared by technical experts from the Biodiversity Directorate of the Ministry of Environment and other institutions that carry out restoration processes in the country.

According to the Vice-Minister of Protected Areas and Biodiversity, Federico Franco, "This Guide is of great value, as it strengthens the efforts of the Ministry of Environment for the restoration of degraded ecosystems and landscapes in the Dominican Republic. It is a tool that serves the Dominican government and institutions working on the issue in the country and will support global efforts regarding restoration, which in turn will contribute to the resilience of ecosystems".

The Green Development Fund for the SICA region has been created by the Central American Commission for Environment and Development (CCAD) with the support of the European Union (EU) and the German Federal Government, to strengthen in the countries of the Central American Integration System (SICA) the capacities to effectively manage, implement and monitor investments in ecosystem and landscape restoration.
